The course will provide an interdisciplinary integration of concepts focusing on the biologic role of lipids and their biotechnological potential. Throughout the program will be addressed fundamental concepts on the function and study of lipids and their metabolites, their biochemical and nutritional role, as well as their main functions as signaling molecules in inflammatory processes and their clinical implications. From both theoretical and practical aspects, the course contents will offer a comprehensive vision, offering concepts and evidence about the key role of lipids in health, their industrial and pharmacological potential applications.
Given the issues proposed in this course, we will select students from Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry, Medicine, Biotechnology and Nutrition postgraduate (master's degree or Ph.D.) or postdoctoral programs. Local and regional postgraduate programs are considering the present application (PEDECIBA and PROINBIO; CABBIO, respectively). We will request a student’s curriculum vitae, motivation letter and letter of recommendation from the current or past advisor. We will prioritize students who are currently working or with prospects to work in the near future on issues related to the contents of this course.
The theoretical conferences, seminars, and symposiums will take place in the Farabeuf auditorium, Medicine School, UDELAR, with capacity for 80 people and wireless internet connection during the course and symposium. This room is fully equipped for conferences and teaching activities. The practical sessions will be carried out in the laboratories of the CEINBIO, having all the needed equipment (HPLC- DAD system; spectrophotometers; electrochemical sensors; culture rooms equipped with stoves and laminar flows). In addition, we will use a triple quadrupole Mass Spectrometer with ion trap QTRAP 4500 ABSciex coupled to HPLC, for the structural characterization and quantification of different lipid compounds.
